The Allison Engine Company developed the model 501 turboprop engine for the Lockheed C-130 Hercules when the aircraft was in its early design phase in the 1950s.
Designated the T56 in military service, versions of this engine power Lockheed C-130 Hercules, Lockheed P-3 Orion, Grumman E-2 Hawkeye and Grumman C-2 Greyhound.
It's civilian cousin, the model 501, was used by the Convair 580/5800, Lockheed L-188 Electra II and the Aerospace Lines Super Guppy.
