1/72 scale injected plastic construction model kit.
Comprises two stage rocket with the Mercury capsule and escape rocket.
The Mercury-Redstone launch vehicle was based on the PGM-11 Redstone, the first large American ballistic missile. A short-range surface-to-surface rocket, it was in active service with the U.S. Army in West Germany. It was also the first missile to launch examples of a live nuclear bomb, first detonated in a 1958 Pacific Ocean weapons test, with two tests occurring over a period of 12 days.
The Mercury-Redstone Launch was used in May 1961 to launch Alan Shepard on his sub-orbital flight to become the second person and first American in space.
Australian Theme Modellers Note! From 1966–67, some surplus modified Redstones called Spartas were launched from the Woomera Test Range, South Australia as part of a joint U.S. – U.K. – Australian research program. These Redstones had two solid fuel upper stages added. A U.S. donated Sparta launched Australia's first satellite, WRESAT, from Woomera in November 1967.
