1/72 scale decal markings.
Ansett Flying Boat Services VH-BRI THE GOLDEN ISLANDER was built as a Catalina amphibian then converted in 1959 by Remmert-Werner of St Louis, Missouri, to a Super Consolidated 28 with seating for up to 22 passengers.
From November 1959 it was based at Proserpine, north Queensland, and used to take holiday-makers to the Ansett-operated Hayman Island resort island of the Great Barrier Reef.
During 1960 it was re-engined with more powerful 1500hp P&W R-2000 engines from Ansett-ANA DC-4 fleet spares.
Unfortunatley, this Catalina's career was short, written off after sinking at moorings at Hayman Island on 8th July 1962. Investigation found the previous landing had been a heavy one that had loosened several rivets. Water entered the hull and the aircraft settled so that only its wings were on the water's surface by morning. It was converted for use as a houseboat.
