The Australian Army will receive the first of 42 Lockheed Martin HIMARS systems in 2025. The remainder should be in service by 2027.
HIMARS is a highly mobile, combat-proven system that is transportable by C-130 HERCULES or C-17 GLOBEMASTER III aircraft.
HIMARS is a multiple launch rocket system mounted on a wheeled chassis carrying either a six-pack Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) or a single tactical cruise missile.
Greatly enhancing the Army's long-range strike capability, Australia's HIMARS will be equipped with the current in-development Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), with range around 500 kilometres.
The Australian Army “is making a generational leap in very short order”, requiring a mind shift from tens of kilometres to hundreds of kilometres, plus a necessity to manage and deconflict airspace through which rockets will travel.
