1/72 scale 3D Printed RESIN construction model kit suitable for experienced modellers.

This is the Hobartville kit re-packagaed by Red Roo with new decal options and two different engines.

The DH.50 series built in the 1920s were a large single engine biplane crewed by one pilot and carrying up to three passengers.  17 were built by de Havilland in the UK. In service, it proved to be a very successful design for the era. The type was popular in Australia with 16 license built in this country as well as small numbers built in Belgium and Czechoslovakia.

Australian operators included QANTAS, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), West Australian Airlines, Larkin Aircraft Supply Co (LASCO) and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).

Notable achievements of the DH.50 included:

    *  Allan Cobham won the 1924 King's Cup Race air race in G-EBFN.

    *  Allan Cobham flew DH.50J G-EBFO (re-engined with the Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar engine) 16,000 mi (25,750 km) from Croydon Airport U.K. to Cape Town in South Africa between November 1925 and February 1926.

    *  G-EBFO was later fitted with twin floats for a survey flight of Australia in 1926.

    *  Also in 1926, a DH.50A floatplane was used in the first international flight made by the Royal Australian Air Force.

Very nicely detailed kit will require careful modelling.

    Kit decals provide markings for:

    *  VH-UAB was officially A10-1 of RAAF A Series 2, but no pictures exist of it marked with an RAAF serial.  It was impressed into RAAF service in late 1942 as an air ambulance for evacuation duty in New Guinea during WWII.  It was re-engined at that time with a 450 hp Pratt & Whitney WASP C.    Once the aircraft arrived in New Guinea, the need for its intended role had passed and it was used as a fuel tanker until witdrawn from service sometime in 1943.  At least one photo exists showing it fitted with a P-40 Kittyhawk belly tank.

Built with a 230 hp Siddeley Puma engine, the aircraft was previously registered as G-AUAB and intially served the Civil Aviation Branch from mid 1924. Between this time and mid 1942, it passed through serveral owners including Sir Charles Kingsford Smith who named it Southern Midget.

    *  VH-UHE, ATALANTA, fitted with a Bristol JUPITER engine served QANTAS from 1928 until October 1934 when it crashed killing the three occupants.

    RAAF Modellers note.   A8-1.

The DH.50 was one of a few types to appear in Series 1 and Series 2.

A8-1 of RAAF A Series 1 was a DH.50A floatplane used in the first international flight made by the Royal Australian Air Force.

Parts or decals are not included to model the kit as A8-1.

    Building 3D printed kits.

    1. The 3D printing process produces striations (small "steps") on the surface of a curved subject created between each run of the printer.  They are quite fine on Hobartville kits but not invisible.   Parts can be surface filled with a fine primer and sanded smooth, but care must be taken not to fill, or to re-scribe, fine surface detail.

    2. Butt joints will need modeller attention.

    3. Fine strut attachment and achieving correct geometry (e.g. landing gear) are tasks the modeller must accept.

    4. Having a biplane jig or making at least a wing jig is essential.

    5. Like any model kit,  your experience, spares box/aftermarket details and references will ensure accurate appearance. markings and paint scheme.

    6. Some details such a wing ribs, may be slightly exaggerated. Sometimes, a small "inaccuracy" in a model is required to capture the look of the subject.  Modeller to use discretion in retaining or subduing such detail.

Requires assembly. Paint and glue are not included.  Constructing resin scale models requires understanding of and adherence to relevant personal safety practices.  There is plenty of information available on the web regarding working with resin models.

This product is not a toy.  Contains small parts that may be a choking hazard.  Keep away from children aged under 3 years.
